Working Out with Your Kids

I know that a lot of FCF readers are parents or have kids, and you have a hard time making it to the gym. So why not make fitness fun and involved for the entire family. Here are a few exercises that you can do with your kids at home or around the house to make exercising fun for all.
1. Run/Walk up and down the stairs (keep it safe)
2. Squats
3. Push-ups
4. Crunches (any variation)
5. Jump Rope
6. Lunges
Pick 4 that you would like to do with your kids and give them a lower rep number than you would give yourself or set a timer for 15-30 seconds and repeat the 4 exercises 5-6 times. It shouldn’t take you any longer than 20-30 minutes.
My nephew is 2 years old and I try to spend as much time with him as possible and we do a lot of walking up and down the stairs because it allows him to count and get used to counting in order. So here is what we do:
1. Walk up and down 15 stairs 3-4 times
2. Walk around the block while he rides his bike and I point out different objects and we discuss what color it is or what the object is
3. We run back and forth up and down the driveway and after each rep we do 10 squats
This tires him out and afterwards we have fruit and a sippy cup of water (I use the sippy cup because he asks me to). He enjoys it and it gets my heartrate going just trying to keep up with him.
Here is a pic of us when we were walking around the block.
excercising with kids
Doing this will allow you to spend time with your family and instill healthy habits that can stick with them for a lifetime.

Dress For Your Body Type

It shocks me to know some women have no idea that simply knowing how to dress for their body type makes shopping so much easier, more gratifying, and fun! For you women that just dread shopping because the hanger seems to rock it so much better, here’s some basic knowledge on how to improve your shopping experience and self image.
womans figure
There are 5 basic body types: rectangle, pear, hourglass, inverted triangle, and diamond.
Rectangle body shape: You have a balanced frame with small, even shoulders and hips, and a slightly smaller waist. This is more of a thin, boyish frame. With this frame, the key is to create curves. Form fitting and proportional dresses with a seam or belt to create a waist are ideal. To create curves, add volume with flowy, gathered tops and bottoms with mix-matching effects and a defined waist. You get to mix/match prints with the best results.
Pear body shape: You’re hips are larger than your bust and your waist gradually slopes out to the hips. To create the hourglass shape, volume and color on the upper body brings the attention upward. De-emphasize your hips with darker colored bottoms. Go for embellished tops, empire waist styles, flutter sleeves, and a line skirts. Strapless dresses look amazing on you!
Hourglass body shape: You’re hips and waist are basically the same size, but your waist is significantly smaller and well defined. To most women, this is “ideal”. Show off your figure with balanced clothing on top and bottom that accentuate your narrow waist. Form fitting clothes like skinnies, tailored shirts, and pencil skirts look best on you. The key is keeping proportional without losing your waistline or risk looking wide. Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy outfits for example. Belts that accentuate your waist are your best friend.
Inverted triangle body shape: You have a large bust or broad shoulders and narrow hips, and your waist is not very well defined. To create a curvacious and balanced look for narrow hips, wear bottoms that add fullness. Gathered skirts, boyfriend jeans, the printed pants; you get to get crazy with all that. You are one of the few that can potentially pull of harem pants. Sleeveless and v-necks look good on top. Avoid full sleeves, but peplum styles look fabulous on you!
Diamond body shape: You’re waist is wider than the narrow shoulders and hips, but the bust is of ample size. Monochromatic looks tend to look best but avoid tight clothing. Add structure to shoulders with some light padding, and draw eyes to your best asset. Bright scarves, full sleeves, broad lapels, and a line skirts work with you. You can bling it up, or chose a monochromatic look with a pop color in one place or thick belt at the waist.
There are body types that are variations of the basics, so just because you think you are one type, doesn’t mean you can’t dip into different water if you want to. I am busty up top and petite everywhere else, but that doesn’t stop me from wearing tunics and leggings like every day. Not sure what your body type is? Put your measurements into the body shape calculator and find out! The first link uses a bust measurement and the second link uses a shoulder measurement.

Summer Reading Recommendations

Summer is here, and one of my favorite things about the sunny season is having enough downtime to finally do some reading for fun, rather than reading mind-melting textbook chapters. Here are a few of my favorite recommendations for summer reads, from lighthearted novels perfect for poolside, to intense mysteries worth diving into.
Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code (both by Dan Brown)
angels and demons book cover
davinci code book cover
I haven’t been able to put down these fast-paced, historical thrillers that challenge Christianity and many of society’s modern beliefs about religion and history. The Da Vinci Code is one of the top-selling novels of all time, and both it and Angels & Demons have been made into hit motion picture films.
Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea (by Chelsea Handler)
chelsea handler book
For a much lighter read, crack open this collection of hilarious and wildly inappropriate stories from comedian and talk show host Chelsea Handler. Handler shares stories about her past, family, relationships and career that had me laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe.
Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness (by Susannah Cahalan)

Be Jeweled by Vera Wang Sponsored Video Review

Ballet dancer and FORD model Laura Love is the face of Be Jeweled! The 21 year old was chosen by Vera Wang to help introduce her new fragrance launched last April. Daughter to Lisa Love, a former model and West Coast editor of Vogue and Teen Vogue, Love was born and raised in California where her life’s passion was notably ballet. Making the decision to move to New York after being injured, Laura still practices ballet but you may have also seen her strutting her stuff on runways like that of Nanette Lepore, Band of Outsiders and, of course, Vera Wang.
“Vera Wang is such an influential, strong woman so it is an honor to be representing her as the face of this campaign,” says Love.
When Vera Wang creates a fragrance, she says she always has someone in mind, a story. “There’s always a woman and what’s she’s doing, what she’s feeling, what she’s experiencing…Because it’s to me really about bottling a dream, an episode in one’s life.” In the video below, the cameras follow Laura Love for an insider’s look at a typical day in her life. Laura’s day looks pretty average for a model’s life but, at the end of the day, she is ready for a night out on the town, and that’s the story Vera Wang wanted Be Jeweled to be a part of. She wanted to capture the energy and the excitement of the perfect girls’ night out. Fashionista, the gem-shaped bottle with jewels will surely adorn any vanity table.
be jeweled picture
Be Jeweled is Vera Wang’s 7th perfume she has branded, and I don’t mind admitting that I am a Vera Wang Princess fan. So I definitely wanted to check out Be Jeweled at Kohl’s, exclusively sold at this retailer. Guess what I’m wearing? I love it! I think it’s a beautiful, sweet smelling scent that’s not only perfect for a girl’s night out, but it’s light enough for a day poolside or even on tennis the court this summer. The notes are a perfect mixture of pomegranate, red current, champagne, passion fruit, florals, musk infused wood and pink sugar crystals.
Enjoy the video: A Day in the Life of Laura Love

Denver Paint the Runway

The Program: Layout and Design by A. Dennis
Denver Paint the Runway program
Hi my fellow fashionistas and fashionistos! It has been a while. Well for those of you who don’t know, FCF put on quite literally the show of a lifetime. Being our first event, Denver Paint the Runway was a huge success. Let me be the first to thank all you loyal readers and supporters! Without you none of this would have even been thought of, so a big thank you from the First Class Fashionista family. I’m here to give you guys the INSIDE story on Denver Paint the Runway. This article will provide background only known to the FCF team!
Planning this event took incalculable man hours and countless amounts of dedication by the FCF team. When Lonza first approached me and two fellow writers about possibly doing an event everyone was in almost instantaneously. After deciding the show basics, the theme, the benefiting charities etc. The hard work began. Planning a show with a budget is hard enough—but planning a show with NO budget is even harder! Luckily, due to Lonza’s (our editor) fierce loyalty to the Denver fashion industry, many different people signed on to help FCF. The lead designers included: Rae Marie Hurst, Juan Jimenez, Maggie Burns, Lisa Wear, Gabriella Martinez and Francis D Roces. The talented graduate and student designers from the Art Institute of Colorado, which were formally introduced to the Denver fashion community included myself, FCF blogger Marissa Lundeen, FCF blogger Robyn Fung, FCF blogger Alyssa Ellson, Heidi Bowden, Jeniffer Hamlett, Tzu Chao, Madeline Haenel, Jenny Wertz, Stephanie Carlson and Efrain Guerro.
Finding sponsors, which meant emailing countless companies, was something the FCF team did on a daily basis. Having THAT much email traffic was REALLY confusing! But like champs, the FCF team pushed through. During all of the business side of things, we had to discuss creative semantics within the show such as hair and makeup. Ted Medina being a longtime supporter of FCF, we were fortunate enough to work with this hairstylist credited as Denver’s hair guru. Supporting salons and makeup artists included Andrea Tucker’s Studio: A Collective of Stylist, Cha Cha Romero and the Vanity Dollz, Three Little Birds, Paul Mitchell, Boston Priest, lead makeup artist Rebecca Jay, Melanie Espinosa, Yvette Munoz, Cory Taylor Bryant, Dionah Austgen. Impressively, each salon brought their own top hairstylists to blow the hair out of the water! In the midst of all this, we had to find models to walk in the designer’s clothing. We asked the designers to call their preferred models and we held a model casting for the student portion of the show. Overall we were blown away by the amount of support we had from that end of fashion. Models thank you for being the face of Denver fashion! Some of Denver’s top models stomped down the runway along with a mixture of new faces. The model call results was nothing short of spectacular.
The day of the show arrived. One of the designers in the show, Rae Marie, said to me, “Everything that can go wrong, will.” Although everything didn’t go wrong, there were a few bumps in the road. But no matter how big the bumps seemed to be, everyone handled it well and remained calm (well as calm as they could being nervous and all). I half expected for things to just start falling into place but, like a jigsaw puzzle, it took some work to get the pieces to all fit. I was constantly running around backstage helping students, designers and models get organized. To our benefit, all the seasoned designers participating in the show knew what to expect and handled things accordingly. So, most of my attention was directed towards those who had never really shown before, the students. Even though most of the students had never done a show before, I was shocked at how professional all of them were.
Thrilled at the fact that FCF had given them a platform in which they could show their work, many of the students were just as nervous and stressed out as I was. To all the students from my Alma mater, AiC, I was proud to see such talent walking down the runway. Actually, one of my personal friends in the audience was telling me that people at the show were stunned that these pieces were done by students. Maggie Burns, Rae Marie, Juan Jimenez, Lisa Wear, Gabriella Martinez, and Kimono Dragons actually ALL created new lines specifically for this event. At the end of the evening, Denver Paint the Runway went off without a problem and we ended up raising some money to support local artists and make it possible for at-risk children to attend art camp this summer.
If you didn’t get mentioned in this article, we want you to know we appreciate ALL of you who helped make DPTR a success! Special thanks goes out to our graphic designer Jarrod Jemison, model Suzie Kaufman for being the face of DPTR, DJ Donald Johnson, Jim Wills for hosting the show, special guests Iman Oubou, NFL player Derrick Martin (and more), our runway coach extraordinaire Oksana Lewicki, Liz Pineda of the Beauty Bar and Rae Marie for their mentorship, Divatise for supplying All of the vino and Cicely O’kain’s manager and event promoter for supplying ALL of the hard liquor for the event. –AND thank you Cicely for delivering the message of DPTR so beautifully. First Class Fashionista believes the children are the future, and learning to love yourself is The Greatest Love of All…Thank you Denver Art Society for hosting this fashion and art collaboration/a game changing event for Denver, Colorado.
Again we at FCF can’t thank you, the readers, and our dear friends who participated in the show enough. You have all been such a huge part in making FCF what it is today. And you never know…we might be doing this again. See you on the DPTR runway next year!
